Our Story · Korean BBQ by a Korean family

The Oh family table.

Real Korean BBQ, run by a Korean family — the way we eat it at home.

Chairwoman Micha Oh · 오미자 회장

It started with one woman and a charcoal grill.

Micha Oh came to the Bay Area from Korea in the 1980s, when Korean groceries were hard to find and Korean BBQ was almost unknown here. In 1989 she opened Koryo Sootbool in Oakland and started grilling over real charcoal — one Berkeley student, one neighbor, one regular at a time.

A generation of East Bay diners came to know her as the mother of Korean BBQ in the Bay Area. In 2005 her table became Ohgane — “the Oh family’s home.”

Today Chairwoman Oh’s recipes, banchan and hospitality run all three Ohgane dining rooms in Oakland, Concord and Alameda. Not Korean-inspired. Korean.
